⚜️ Altavoz Lab at NAHJ 2026

Altavoz Lab was proud to be represented at the 2026 National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Conference in New Orleans, where our community shared expertise on the future of journalism and the importance of serving audiences with impactful, community-centered reporting.

Our Founder and Executive Director, Valeria Fernández, led the “Mastering the Solo Hustle” freelancers panel, organized by the Institute of Independent Journalists (IIJ), featuring Carolina Murriel, co-founder of Pizza Shark, independent data journalist Silvia Canelón, and IIJ leader Ann Marie Awad. During the discussion, she shared practical insights on building a sustainable freelance career and navigating today’s evolving media landscape.

Altavoz Lab Community Journalism Fellow alumna and engagement coach Claudia Amaro, founder of Planeta Venus spoke on the panel “Immigration: 101 Tips for Covering Raids, Detention Center and More.” She encouraged journalists to look beyond policies and statistics, reminding attendees that immigration stories are also about work, education, families and communities. Drawing on her work with the Reynolds Journalism Institute, Claudia shared practical tools to help reporters center people, not policies, and cover immigrant communities with empathy, context and care.

We’re proud to see Altavoz Lab leaders and alumni helping shape conversations that strengthen journalism and empower reporters to better serve their communities.
