Our Model

DEEPLY ROOTED AND RISING
Redefining advancement for community-first journalists as “staying power”
Our Vision
We envision a future in which every community – especially those long overlooked, disinvested in, and misrepresented in mainstream media – has access to courageous, culturally grounded, community-centered journalism that strengthens democracy from the ground up. In this reality, local reporters are well-trained, resourced and able to thrive without having to leave their communities behind. Their work reflects the languages, identities and lived experiences of their audiences, expanding social cohesion, civic participation and driving solutions emerging from the community itself.
Our Model
Through Altavoz Lab, local journalists learn from one another, share solutions, and build a support network that lasts beyond their fellowship, reducing burnout and strengthening collective knowledge.
The outcome: Journalism that fosters social cohesion, expands civic infrastructure and strengthens democracy from the ground up.

A Virtuous Cycle for Local News
1. INVESTMENT & PARTNERSHIPS
Strategic funding from philanthropy, newsroom co-investments and earned revenue fuels our programming.
2. COMMUNITY-FIRST CAREER PATHS
A tiered program of fellowships and residencies provide direct investment, mentorship and wraparound support.
3. STRONGER LOCAL NEWS INFRASTRUCTURE
This leads to the retention of community-rooted journalists and more impactful, community-first journalism.

Altavoz Lab co-designs career paths with local journalists, centering their lived realities, caregiving responsabilities and community commitments.
