🤝 Meet Our Fellows: Carlos Berríos Polanco: Reporting at the Intersection of Climate, Conflict, and Justice

Carlos Berríos Polanco is an award-winning journalist and photojournalist from Caguas, Puerto Rico, whose work explores climate, conflict, and human rights. Currently serving as a podcast producer and editor for Es Mental, a Puerto Rican magazine focused on mental health, Carlos has built a career amplifying the stories that often go untold in the Caribbean and beyond.

Previously, he made history as Latino Rebels’ first Caribbean Correspondent, reporting on topics ranging from environmental justice to political unrest. His reporting has been featured in outlets such as The Latino NewsletterClimate Tracker, and NBC News, and his visual work has appeared in major documentaries including Bad Bunny’s “El Apagón / Aquí Vive Gente.

In his latest piece for The Latino Newsletter, Carlos examined how the FBI and Puerto Rico Police monitored pro-independence groups, sparking renewed discussions about state surveillance and freedom of expression on the island.

As a fellow of Altavoz Lab, Carlos continues to highlight how crises overlap in communities of color and colonized territories. His work stands as a testament to journalism’s power to confront systemic injustice and center the lived experiences of those most affected.

“For me, community journalism means not doing the typical kind of journalism … But rather, being in constant dialogue with the communities you cover.” — Carlos Berríos Polanco.
